Russian Typhoon Class Submarine [[Monday December 28th, 2009 :: 10:58am]] abandonedplaces [r_eddeth] I don't know if this has been floated around or not, but this is a tour of an old Russian Typhoon class submarine in mothballs. Pretty incredible, they are the largest submarine ever built, and to see some of the things in it is amazing. A Request [[Thursday December 24th, 2009 :: 11:03am]] abandonedplaces [dj_axle] Hello Fellow Explorers! I have a unique request, and a chance to help preserve historical information for hopefully several more years. A beloved website of mine, www.pinetreeline.org will be closing down for good at the end of the year. So I've launched a project to maintain the information about this line of Radar Stations, and hope to launch a new site in 2010. So why am I posting this here? Simple, I know that there are people on this site spread out across all of Canada, several might be near former bases or have visited them in the past. I would like to include your photos on my new site, fully credited to the photographer of course! So if you have such things you want to contribute, post a comment here and I'll send you my email address to send the stuff to. Khust Castle, The Carpathians, Ukraine [[Thursday December 24th, 2009 :: 10:34am]] abandonedplaces [tynjatka] This castle was built in the XI c. as the Hungarian royal castle for the defence of the salt way. And it was destroyed by an explosion in the XVIII c. Now it is called as the Drakula Castle. Certaintly, it is a legend, but you know, I can't download my pictures - only one, the first :-( For me it was a quite strange and frighten place. Imagine, you have to go up during 1,5 hours to the empty woody hill with the cemetory in its half-way. It was unexpected, because these ruins are like in the centre of a small town. I was alone and in the half-way I was completely afraid and wanted to go back, but it was shame to do it and pity... So I walked up and up, with a hope to meet people at least in the top. I saw people only twice. And you know, in such a place you don't know is it better or not :-). Then, in the top it was even more awful. I was alone, only with stones and "jungles"... I ran there and tried to do photos with my hands trembling... and then I really ran down... As a result I reduced near 3 kg :-) or more.... The Abandoned of 2009 [[Monday December 21st, 2009 :: 7:03pm]] abandonedplaces [dark_fetus] [ mood | accomplished ] So... as I look back upon the past year, I feel blessed to have been able to see and share as much as I have. As a farewell to 2009 (and hello to 2010) I made a video up for our YouTube channel. It features highlights from our outings over the past 9 months. Some locations in the video are places I have posted about here, other locations will not be familiar to some of you. These are places I will be posting to this group in the near future. Though I did not originally intend to post the video here, I now think that I should. Perhaps to get people pumped up for the new year, or to reflect on their own past year. In the end, all we (Christina and I) really wish is for people to treat these places with a little more respect and dignity. The members of this group seem like the type that do just that, so it is you who I intended the video for anyway... More than just rotting wood lies within these walls. There's history to be learned, and knowledge to be instilled. Wishing everyone the best in 2010, and to not fall through too many decaying floors... ~Rusty 28 + comment

The Junction... [[Monday December 21st, 2009 :: 9:53am]] abandonedplaces [dj_axle] Toronto has a area called the Junction, based around a strong rail presence became a hotbed for industry in the early 20th Century. As it died, it became a hotbed for abandoned building. Many these days have been rebuilt into condos or simply demolished. Here's a selection of photos from the area... [[Saturday December 19th, 2009 :: 7:48pm]] abandonedplaces [bullandterrier] [ music | mazzy star - disappear ] This is part two of gynocide and I's roadtrip to Trona.. part one I posted yesterday, of our brief stop in Garlock, CA. Once we got into Trona we decided to stop at the Pinnacles for sight-seeing but the 8 mile unpaved dirt road didn't seem like much fun to me.. even with 4x4. We still got some nice views of the Pinnacles though. Anywho.. one of the first abandoned buildings that can be seen while driving through Trona is an abandoned gas station.. not a very welcoming sight. ( Read more... ) 11 + comment

Third Piece [[Sunday December 20th, 2009 :: 12:29pm]] abandonedplaces [thedancingleper] Final piece for The Examination Room series. Dammasch State Hospital. Abandoned in the early 90's, torn down several years ago to make way for a housing development. I saw it twice in its abandoned state, once before Navy Seals practiced there and once after.
